OUR STUDENTS TALK ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE IN ZLOTORYJA
On March 24th, five students from Podesti school of Chiaravalle, participating in the Erasmus project “Learning Democracy by school”, left for Poland for a new chapter in this experience.
For five days the students were hosted by local families and carried out a series of activities together with their Polish and German companions.
During that days the students also visited the school and Zlotoryja. The project offered our students the awareness of growing into European citizenship.
OUR STUDENTS TALK ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE IN TREUENBRIETZEN
The meeting about the Project Erasmus + entitled “learning by democracy” took place from the 14th to the 20th of October in Treuenbrietzen. The partners involved were 15 Podesti- Calzecchi- Onesti Institute students together with other German and Polish students.
Our students , at the end of the project, came back to Italy full of enthusiasm and satisfaction and are ready to tell us their great experience
“ it has been an experience full of emotions, surely we didn’t think to be able to create such a loving friendship and bond with our foreign peers and with the most part of the families who hosted us.
We found a sweet welcoming; everyone has been gentle , loving and caring with us.
The Podesti students have been welcomed by The major of the Host city, who followed attentively all our initiatives, so that we could find every day at ease.
Every day we could practise different activities, like games in order to better know each other, group discussions, creative labs, football and volleyball marche, yoga, etc, everything strictly in English language.
Besides knowing Treuenbrietzen, we visited Potsdam and an entire day has been dedicated to the visito f Berlin and its famous wall.
This experience has been more than positive and we will always record it in our heart, it is a pity that it lasted only one week.
This has made us grow up culturally and emotionally, and has opened a “window” outside Italy. We got accustomed to the different way of living and thinking in Germany.
We have understood how important is to know an International language such as English language, in order to communicate with the rest f the world. Surely we can now feel more like European citizens. It would be likely that experiences like this could happen again.
Besides that, the participation to this initiative has been very useful , to strengthen the bond and friendship among us.
We would like to give a special thank to the teachers Alvaro and Iannaci who demonstrated fantastic, they supported us and helped us to face this fantastic experience in the best possible way.”.
The history of our democracy in comics
The students studied the origins of our democracy and transformed it into comics. The course approached the theme of how democracy in Italy was founded at the end of the 2nd world war and how it gradually developed. Comics are an easier way of expanding and disseminating knowledge among young people.
LET’S STUDY OUR INSTITUTIONS
A law teacher carried out the activity in two classrooms. The students approached an analysis of how a municipality works from an administrative side and at political level. |
The training path allowed to focus the concept of democracy through representative mechanisms.

DEMOCRACY SNACK CORNER IN PROGRESS
Democratic Debate
We think that one of the most persuasive points to make in being favor of democracy is the idea that it is the form of government in which the most amount of voices can be heard.
So it’s really important to learn to debate.
Democracy week
What a wonderful experience!
On Thursday 8 March 2018 the Mayor of Chiaravalle, Damiano Costantini, came to school Podesti to meet students and to speak about Democracy and Vote.
The Mayor and the Vice Headmaster, Maggiori Roberta, gave the official start of a strong collaboration between the Municipality of Chiaravalle and the Podesti Calzecchi-Onesti Institute.
The human resources responsible of Chiaravalle Municipality, Silvia Campanella, gave some exemples of this collaboration which has just started some years before.
The expert teacher, Giuliani Magda, made a focus on Democracy. Her words were really interesting for our students.
The teacher Sonia Scipioni invited the students to reflect about the Democracy definition of the magistrate Colombo:
“Imperfect, demanding, fragile.
But indispensable, because it hasn’t rivals if you have to guarantee the search of individual happiness, in respect and in consideration of others.
This is Democracy. We breathe it every day.”
On Friday 9 March 2018 some students of Podesti Institute went to clean some areas of Chiaravalle with the sport Assessor of Chiaravalle Municipality Eleonora Chiappa in collaboration with RIECO.
This experience helped the students to appreciate and to respect their environment!
On Monday 12 March 2018 some students of Podesti Institute went to visit Chiaravalle Municipality. They spoke with the Mayor Costantini and with the responsible of human research Silvia Campanella. Then they visited the different offices!!!
It was really interesting!!! The students asked about the employee’s duties.
Alberici House:
reception facility for young women alone with their children
Last February the students of IIS Podesti Calzecchi-Onesti went to Alberici House to bring help and joy to these alone women with their children. They talked about traditions and shared music, dance and customs of each country.
The students have created their own cooperative since January and they have created a strong team which has attention towards fragilities and inclusion.
In this structure they met lots of foreign women from Nigeria, Somalia, Camerun, Ivory Coast and Senegal. They spoke a lot together and then they danced with an Italian and African compilation.
The foreign women participated with a big enthusiasm: they felt at home and they forgot, for just a moment, the sadness and the violence of their past.
SAN VALENTIN IN DEMOCRACY
We can’t have democracy without love!
The social cooperative
THE GOLD ACORNS OAK
The Podesti Institute takes part at the project “Growing up in cooperation” with the aim to achieve a real cooperative education.
On Friday 19 January in the great hall of Podesti Institute our students signed the Constitutive Act of this new experience which is going to help people with fragilities or special needs.
Our students will produce goods and services: organic vegetable garden products, bookmarks and support services.
During the signature of the Costitutive Act, very important personalities participated to emphasize the value of this social cooperative: the Headmaster Vinicio Cerqueti, the Vice Headmaster Roberta Maggiori, the Mayor of Chiaravalle Damiano Costantini and the Assessor of Chiaravalle Andrea Alcalini.

LEARNING TO DISCUSS IN DEMOCRACY
ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT
video: learning to discuss in democracy
These students are learning how to defend their thesis in a democratic way.
The Italian teacher Enrica Orsi presents a problem to analyse, the students have to expose their thesis and opinion about this problem and naturally they have to find argumets to support their thesis. Furthermore they have to find and to argue an antithesis. Then there is the disproof of the antithesis and the conclusion in favor of their own thesis.
Last week the teacher Orsi divided the students into two groups to support their thesis about this problem:
“During adolescence it is very important for teenagers to take part in a group. Lots of them imitate wrong and dangerous behaviours to be accepted in a group. According to you, is it right to conform with these dangerous behaviours for fear to be isolated, or is it better to respect our nature remaining themselves?”
The teacher gave them a thesis to support for each group:
- During adolescence the group is really important and teenagers can’t stay without a group at the cost of imitating wrong behaviours.
- During adolescence teenagers have to be themselves also at the cost of remaining isolated.
This activity helps students to defend a thesis and also to understand the antithesis, the oppositive point of view.
This is an exemple of DEMOCRATIC EDUCATION by supporting the individual development of each young person and by helping young people learn about themselves, engage with the world around them, and become positive members of society.
