FINAL MEETING IN CHIARAVALLE
23th – 27th September 2019

Debating, Negotiating, Discussing, Fixing – Two years of successful cooperation between the cities of Chiaravalle, Zlotoryja and Treuenbrietzen will be celebrated this week.

Whether class council, full board meeting, inclusion, engagement, cooperation or discussion with political representatives of the city – as a result, many steps were taken on the path to a democratic togetherness. We learned a lot from each other. We want to use these experiences to reach a new level of participation. Here, the country borders are becoming increasingly insignificant. Friendships within the project partners have grown and will help consolidate our common Europe.

Café Europe

During the Erasmus project “Learning democracy by school”, the student company “Funk & Eat” was born. Together with pupils of the course “Political Education” a European Café should open at the comprehensive school in

Treuenbrietzen. The café will open for the second half of the school year 2019/2020. The aim is to support the European idea and counteract increasing nationalist ideas.

In order to reach the goal, the students of the course “Political Education” will cooperate with the students from the company “Funk & Eat”. They will offer once a month typical culinary specialties for all students at school.

European flags should not only promote the café, but also reflect the European idea.

Stadtwald

Brandenburg’s forests are threatened by forest fires. One proven cause is the climate changes that lead to long periods of heat and drought. After a huge forest fire in the city forest Treuenbrietzen the pupils of the comprehensive school Treuenbrietzen helped to reforest the city forest.

First democracy exhibition at comprehensive school

On 21.2. 2019 the first major dissemination event took place within the framework of the Erasmus project at the Comprehensive School.

The students of the seminary class Democracy of the 12th class organized the democracy exhibition in cooperation with many interesting guests.

For example, the Children and Youth Parliament of Tempelhof-Schöneberg (Berlin) visited us with three representatives, the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation, the head of the „Junge Union“ Brandenburg and local and regional representatives from various political camps.

In addition to representatives from the city administration (mayor, manager for participation, climate manager) also interested parents supported this democratic concept.

The students of the seminar presented the results of their seminar papers on democracy in school and society.

During the project, which has been going on for almost two years now, many projects have been started at the school on democracy and participation, which were presented by the students at the exhibition.

This is how the student company presented itself with its award-winning “Burgwallbrot”. The 11th class is planning a big school party and all students want to participate in the organization. In addition, a yearbook and school shirts are to be designed. The project Raumtransformation has presented the transformation of a cellar into a school café.

All students and teachers took the opportunity and learned about the actions that had taken place.

First school assembly 2018/2019 – something’s growing

The first school assembly in this school year made a significant difference to all students, who have been part of this school for some time. Not only because of the increase in the number of students, this gathering, to which all school staff had been invited, took on a different character than past events.

It was thus a worthy framework in which the spokesperson for the past year was thanked and approved for her work. At the same time, the newly elected team of the student council, student spokesman Felix Keller (11a) with his deputies Cassandra Ehringhausen and Jonas Brunkow, could introduce themselves.

Planned, organized and conducted by students of the Seminar Course Democracy (11) and accompanied by musical assistance by the school band “Creepy Windbag” and culinary assistance by the 12th claas there was especially one topic at the center of the event: How do we all want to interact with each other in this school? Respect, esteem and decency were encouraged by discussions by students and supplemented by speeches from the audience. It was impressive to see older students applauding the words of their youngest classmates with thunderous applause.
It is obvious, that it is not done with that – concepts such as the project of “break buddies / Pausenbuddies” are implemented. The question of how we all want to develop the common school in this regard will not only keep us busy this year. Projects initiated by students, such as the upcoming SchülerRadio or Catering (“funk and eat”) are needed here as well as other well-attended school meetings in the future.

Class council

In May 2018 the class council was introduced to the 7th grade. By participating in the class council, they will learn social behavior, a sense of responsibility, the ability to solve conflicts and a sense of community.

This class council is an instrument based on democratic values enhancing the learners’ ability to act according to these democratic values. In a trusting environment students are able to experience various democratic processes like discussing issues and participating in the learning process. Taking part in finding a solution to a certain issue shows that students are more likely to cooperate.

Schülerfirma Loge

Throughout many class council meetings, the pupils created a concept for a firm made for the school called “Funk & Eat”. With that concept in mind the students applied for a competition made by the people who take part in the Erasmus-Project. During multiple class council meetings, the learners took full responsibility and distributed task, discussed issues and solved problems completely on their own. Teachers accompanied them and acted as advisors.

Nicer School

The “to do list” of the working group “rooms” of the Democracy course was the basis for the “school beautification” campaign at the end of this school year.

The aim of the seminar was, actively and independently to contribute to change or to make the school more beautiful.

So the class 8b has refreshed the history room with help of a large number of volunteers and creative minds in color and theme. The first colored results can now be admired, the completion is expected soon.

Successful workshops in Treuenbrietzen on communication and rhetorics by SV-Bildungswerk

How can I improve my speaking without notes? What should be considered when talking in front of a large amount of people? And how can we convince our school administration to support our summer trip during class time? These are only some of the questions that were on the timetable for the students of grammar school “Am Burgwall” in Treuenbrietzen on Tuesday, 19th and Wednesday, 20th of June. On two consecutive days, facilitators from SV-Bildungswerk realized a seminar that had the main target of strengthening the rhetorical skills of the students and to let them experience the importance of good speaking for successful negotiations in a democratic society. On the first day, we worked with the Seminarkurs from the 11th grade, the “democracy course” that has already been introduced on this website earlier, while on the second day we focused on the elected class representatives and the members of the Schülervertretung (student representation). In addition to a lot of interactive exercises all around speaking in front of people, preparing good content and communicating with others, the students reflected about their year in the Seminarkurs respectively in the Schülervertretung. In a big simulation game about negation training, the students tried to convince parents, teachers and the school administration to permit a three-day class trip during a school week – and in the end, they won after long discussions 🙂 and experienced a democratic process at first hand.

It was a lot of fun to work in the grammar school in Treuenbrietzen and we already look forward to the next workshops in October!

FROM THE CELLARROOM TO SCHOOL CAFÉ

Since 2017, increased opportunities for democratic participation of pupils have been created in our school. In this context, for example, the students oft he 8th classroom planned to redesign a room in the basement of our school, which will be used as a school café and relaxation in the future.

The plans have not yet been finalized, but in the meantime great ideas have already been created with the support of the school social worker Sven Gatter and the class teachers Martina Wiesner and Elisabeth Vollstädt-Werdier. In the following photo film you will get a good impression of the current status:

These pupils and teachers are part of the first „Seminarkurs Demokratie“  (democratic course) at our school. Since the beginning of this school year, we tried to improve our school’s life in different ways. All in all it’s about starting democratic processes in communication, organization and decisions.

We soon realized that’s a long way to go. But the first steps are done.

Have a look at the teams, who focus on special problems or subjects!

Participation culture in Treuenbrietzen- Vote!

Together with all citizens, the municipality of Treuenbrietzen is working on a participation culture in Treuenbrietzen!

For this purpose, online surveys and many survey sessions where the TED system can be coordinated live are conducted.

The survey on participation in Treuenbrietzen started very well!

Nearly 60 citizens came to the “Marketplace of Participation” in the context of the Social Space Conference on 20.03.2018 at 19:00 clock in the auditorium of the Gymnasium am Burgwall and took part in the survey on participation in Treuenbrietzen. …

There are many different approaches to participation. In Treuenbrietzen every citizen has a different idea of it.

The TED survey on public participation carried out during the event aims to identify a common understanding of participation in loyalty networks. Voting during these events is via a remote control. The survey includes several questions about participation, such as about which way the citizen is reached.

At the moment the questionnaire with pupils of the 7th to 11th class level takes place in the grammar school “Am Burgwall”. It will be evaluated separately and the findings will be incorporated into the LDBS project.

Mission Statement: Exchange among citizen and colleagues

On February 26 2018, the mission statement evening for the year 2017 took place. The annual event was held this time in the format of the “Marketplace of Ideas”. The direct exchange between administration and citizens should be the focus.

In the seventh year after the decision of the city of Treuenbrietzen, the mayor and the staff of adminisitraion evaluated the goals and measures of the financial year 2017 in a local meeting.

In addition, the city’s residents were given an overview of all the plans and measures planned for 2018.

A big thank you to the 38 colleagues of the city administration! They were ready for an exchange with citizens. Thus, the colleagues, and also the citizens present, gave valuable feedback for the future handling of the mission statement and the event. We like to take these suggestions with us and work on an improvement! In the future, as a city administration, we will continue to focus on events that involve a direct exchange. We would be glad if more citizens would reach our reputation, and we look forward to any idea that further strengthens us on the way!

This exchange is an important way for a democratic coexistence.

2nd school assembly

On the 23rd of February 2018 the secondary school meeting took place at the Gymnasium Am Burgwall from 8:50 am to 9:25 am.

It was initiated and organized by the 1st Democracy Seminar Course of the 11th grade.

All students and teachers of the Gymnasium were gathered in the auditorium. Accompanied by exciting music, a voice sounded from the non- and agreed with the attendees on the assembly. The students of the seminar course marched in and formed themselves on stage.

There they presented their working groups established during the previous democracy work and their first results.

  • working group rooms
  • working group sports tournaments
  • working group workshops

Furthermore, they informed the school about the planned charitable day at the school before the summer holidays.

By means of a small theatrical performance, the most competing project at the school was proclaimed and explained. In addition, the member oft he seminar course designed a flyer to inform all students of the school.

Until 2. of May, interested parties have the possebility to submit a project concept and to win the 500 Euro for the implementation of the project. To vote for the best project, there will be a vote in the school.

The seminary course organizers independently organized the plenary meeting and devised exciting methods to reach their audience. They are becoming more and more courageous and self-confident – they are becoming more and more accomplished in front of their large audience.

The most important thing: they enjoy!

The arrangements with the janitors to the establishment of the auditorium they have organized independently. The event working group has supported the performance with microphone, music etc. All members of seminar course had been involved – everyone was assigned a specific task.

The first school assembly at high school Treuenbrietzen

The first school assembly was initiated and organized by some seminary course students, teachers and employees of the municipality.

Almost all students of the school and some teachers were present.

At the beginning, headmaster Mr. Ulbrich emphasized the great importance of democracy in the school. Two presenters / team leaders led the students through their first school assembly. The students needed start-up help and support, they expressed only reserved and skeptical to questions and emerging issues. The first seminar course democracy at the Gymnasium introduces itself to the students and teachers. They asked their classmates what topics at the school they are interested in and called for a big poll at school. Following the school assembly, workshops were held with SV- Bildungswerk. The results were the first working groups dedicated to different topics and trial solutions.
