Germany_students’ democratic projects

A method to learn democracy – a democratic method?

Students initiate projects to improve democracy and identification at our „new“ school.

Not only the name of our school changed from “Gymnasium” to “Gesamtschule” recently – some further transformation is in progress. Such as an increased number of students in the first classes compared to the past years. The school is now opened to everybody, not depending on personal requirements like the chance to graduate.

These changes in school life are accompanied by conflicts and irritations. Older students may look at the “new ones” critically and complain about misbehavior and a lack of respect towards teachers and themselves. On the other hand new pupils are criticizing the elder ones to be “elitist” and to show arrogance. In addition not only we are worrying about the reputation of the school as a result of this trend.

At that point we, nine students of the democracy class (11th grade), asked ourselves how to avoid that these misunderstandings will grow up into hard conflicts. Soon we discovered ways how to act:

  1. a) to strengthen the participation of numerous students in school life,
  2. b) to offer various opportunities to come together in school but outside lessons and
  3. c) to take part in something that makes our daily life at school more satisfying.

Concerning to these basics we tried to be creative and to start-up our own projects.

Our three projects are not finished yet. They are quite different, but all of them are focusing on the same aims:

  • Supporting the evolvement of our new school community
  • Intensifying the identification with our school
  • Empowering of students to participate in student-projects

Look at the impetuses we developed:

  1. A) The Party

You surely think, what’s this … a party? This has nothing to do with school community? Has it! We will strengthen the relationships of our students and those of other secondary schools in the area. Our school party will teach the students, which is often too short, that school brings a lot of positive. So we combine recreational experiences with school life and leave a positive we-feeling, that also on Monday morning still persists. Student of all grades are involved in planning, organization, promoting and realization of the event. By realizing their success the students will gain self-confidence, but also contribute to school life and identification.

  1. B) The Yearbook

Every student should be given the opportunity to remember in the future more easily and community-building what made up most of their own youth, school life. As part of our school chronicle, a yearbook and a time capsule will be created. The production will be taken over by students themselves, all school members have the opportunity to bring their own ideas and may create today the past of tomorrow. By planning and realizing the yearbook students get more involved into school life, just because they have to think: what is precious about school events, what should be remembered and reported. On the other side the result (yearbook) supports the identification of each member, because he/se recognizes him- or herself in the book as a part of the whole school.

  1. C) The Outfit

Our idea for better cooperation at our school is the common outfit. Hoodies, shirts and socks for everyone! No matter, you’re young or old – student, or teacher – anyone should wear it. This is not a uniform, but: wear our shirt and show yourself as part of the whole. During the process of developing the first shirt, all students are invited to design their own prototype. The best design will be elected by the school’s audience. In the end there should be a cool shirt for a small prize.

  • At first, we decided to carry out a survey related to Student Board. We wanted to see how our students understand the tasks of Student Board and how they perceive the activities of Student Board in our School. The results of this survey helped us to plan the activites connected with the ERASMUS+ project “Learning democracy by school”.

The aim of the project is the  knowledge of the flora of the Chiaravalle area, creating a web site accessible to anyone interested and visible (by link) on the institutional website of the Municipality of Chiaravalle. Educating at the environment means offering the tools to recognize and appreciate the value of biodiversity through the creation of cards, photographic documentation of the plants and the creation of a site.
At the end of May an open day was organized for citizenship and local schools where the children participating in the project will organize guided tours.

Italy_Project “Breakfast with Constitution”

For the seventieth anniversary of the Italian constitution on November 29 2018 the third-year students of Podesti school of Chiaravalle participated in the live broadcast of the event “Breakfast with Constitution” at the UCI Cinema in Jesi.
